2022: MEET ME AT THE CAFE! The stories behind the cafés of Gladstone 1900-1970.

The Alhambra Cafe, Railway Refreshment Room, Niagara Cafe, Sea Spray Restaurant, Orion Cafe, California Grill Bar, Spencer’s Home Cooking … these were the places to be from the early 1900s through to the 1970s in Gladstone’s entertainment scene. After a night at the picture theatres – Civic, Regent, Glen Drive In – young people would meet at a local café to turn on the juke box and jive to the latest tunes. “Meet me at the Café” tells the stories of a time before television, computers and online dating. Take a walk down memory lane when you read the stories of the cafés and tea rooms of Gladstone. $30 + $11 postage (ordinary mail).

I published a collection of stories about the street names of Gladstone, “What’s in a Name? The stories behind the street names of Gladstone”. My first published book gives a glimpse into the fascinating history behind the street names of the city of Gladstone, Queensland, Australia.

I research local history and for 26 years I wrote a daily column called “Times Gone By” in the “Gladstone Observer” which was our local newspaper. Many of these articles feature historical accounts of the many people who have played a part in the development of the Gladstone region.

I conducted History Walks along Goondoon Street and related the history of some of the buildings along the way. Some of these buildings have been depicted in Geoff Head’s art works.
